What is the level of SDU’s ecology?
An analysis of the campus’ ecological footprint

People are learning more and more about climate change and environmental problems every day, and many of them are trying to help solve these problems. Educational institutions should also actively support ecological projects. A university is not only a place to study, but also a place where future leaders are formed. From this point of view, the question appears: how eco-friendly is SDU University?
We looked at important things like green areas on campus and waste management to check the ecological situation at SDU. We also talked with Mr. Shokan, an employee of the maintenance department, to get more information.

Green areas at SDU: just for beauty or really useful?
On the SDU territory, we can often see grass and trees. These green areas help clean the air, reduce temperature, and keep the natural balance. According to a 2023 report by the student club “Qamkor,” about 25% of the university territory is covered with green areas.
But how are these areas maintained?
Mr. Shokan, a maintenance worker, says:
“We water these areas regularly. As you can see, there are special water machines, and we have responsible people who take care of them.”
Waste management: system exists, but does it work?
In SDU buildings, there are special bins for plastic, paper, and general waste. This is a good start. But how well does the waste separation system work?
A small survey with 50 students showed that 70% of them believe the waste is not separated properly.
Mr. Shokan said:
“Sometimes students throw food waste into the plastic bin. This breaks the whole process. We need to do more education about proper waste separation.”
This shows the gap between infrastructure and student's behavior.
Saving water and energy in the campus: still needs improvement
In the first semester of 2024, many students complained about the taste of water in the blocks. They said that in D block, the water tasted bad because the filter was not changed often.
About energy and lighting, many people say that sometimes the lights go out because SDU uses only one energy source. This distracts students and affects the study process.
We also asked Mr. Shokan about how to solve these problems:
“Water filters were changed in all blocks, and we haven’t received complaints recently. About energy: when Block I was being built, there were some technical issues, and the lights went off often. But now, the problem is solved. Also, students have two Wi-Fi options: SDU Wifi and SDU Wifi 5G.”
According to him, now there are no serious problems with water or energy at the university.

“I like the green areas, but I think there are not enough trees. After I throw my garbage, I don’t know where it goes.”
Madina, 1st year (Multimedia):
“SDU is not bad, but eco clubs should organize training. More students should be involved.”
Conclusion
SDU University is taking important first steps toward being more eco-friendly. The green areas on campus help the environment, and the university has started a waste sorting system and made improvements in water and energy use. These actions show that SDU is thinking about the future and trying to protect the environment.
However, there are still problems. The green spaces could be improved, especially by planting more trees. The waste sorting system does not always work well because many students do not follow the rules. Also, some students still worry about water and electricity, even though the university says these problems are fixed.
To really become an environmentally friendly campus, SDU needs support from everyone. Students, teachers, and staff must all work together. Eco clubs can organize training and events to teach more about ecology. The university can also listen more to students’ ideas and include them in green projects.
In short, SDU has started the journey toward sustainability, but there is still a long way to go. With teamwork and responsibility, it is possible to make SDU a green and clean campus for the future.
